Threw a brand new Bosch VP44 in my '01 Cummins and got worse mileage than before

I swapped in a reman VP44 injection pump on my 24-valve 5.9 back in March thinking I'd fix a stumble and maybe even pick up a MPG or two. After 800 miles of highway driving, my mileage dropped from 18.5 to 16.2, and it still stumbled cold. Turns out the new pump's timing was way off from the factory, and I had to recheck the gear and housing alignment. What's your take on trusting reman vs. sending yours out to a specialty shop in a place like Ft. Worth?

800 miles is enough to tell you it's not just break-in, so your timing check was the right call. I actually trust buying from a known shop like Industrial Injection over a random reman because they'll set the timing and test it before it ships. You can throw money at parts all day, but if the factory setup is lazy, you're just gambling on the next pump doing the same thing.

Send the old one to a specialty shop. Remans are a gamble, timing off from the factory is just lazy.

Did you ever try sending it to a local machine shop instead? I had an old one rebuilt for way less than a reman and it's been solid for years lol.
