Read in a shop manual from 1998 that a 7.3 Powerstroke can have up to 17 quarts of oil in the whole system, not just the pan... always thought it was just the 15 the book says to put in.

Yeah, always add the extra quart after an oil change to fill the filter housing.

That 1998 manual just revealed the truck's secret oil stash. Guess the dipstick only tells part of the story, doesn't it? Now I'm wondering what else my truck is hiding from me.

Actually, the dipstick should show the full amount if you check it right. Might be worth wiping it and checking again after the engine's been off a while. Those old manuals do have some weird hidden details though.
