My brother-in-law called me cheap for using a coupon at the hardware store

We were at the big box store in Springfield last weekend, grabbing some PVC fittings for a job. I pulled out my phone to show the cashier a 20% off coupon I got from their app. My brother-in-law, standing right there, just shook his head and said, 'Man, you'll pinch a penny till it screams.' It was in the checkout line, with people behind us. I mean, it's not like I was holding anyone up, the app was already open. I just don't get why saving money on stuff you need is seen as a bad thing. Anyone else get weird comments for just trying to use a discount?

What's cheap about using a coupon they literally give out? That's just smart. I'd rather have that twenty percent in my pocket than give it to some huge corporation for no reason. Your brother-in-law's comment says more about him than you. Next time he buys something, ask him if he wants you to Venmo him the extra cash he decided to just throw away.
