My cat tried to adopt a garden statue as her new best friend
Today, my cat Mochi spent a solid hour trying to get a concrete garden gnome to play with her. She kept batting at its hat and then looking up at its face, waiting for a reaction. She even brought her favorite mouse toy and dropped it at the gnome's feet, which was equal parts sweet and ridiculous. Has your pet ever tried to befriend something that definitely wasn't alive?

That mouse toy at the gnome's feet is a pretty solid effort. But I have to ask, is a cat trying to befriend a statue really that deep? It's just a cat being weird, which is basically their default setting.

My neighbor's cat spent three weeks trying to get a garden hose to play with it. The black coil just sat there on the grass, but that cat would stalk it, bat at the nozzle, and then look deeply confused. It gave up when a real squirrel ran by. Cats assign meaning to the strangest inanimate objects.
