The 20 second warm-up doodle trick that finally got me drawing again
Last month I kept sitting down to draw and freezing up because I wanted every page to look good, so I started doing a 20 second warm-up scribble of whatever is on my desk before anything else. It worked so well that I now have 14 pages of junk doodles in my notebook, and the actual drawings after them come out way looser. Does anyone else need a throwaway warm-up before their hand stops being stiff, or is that just me?
How long did it take before the warm-up stopped feeling like a chore? I get the logic behind it, but my brain still wants to skip straight to the real page because the clock is ticking. Curious if the habit stuck on its own after a week or two.
The "clock is ticking" pressure is real and I think that's the whole problem, because a warm-up only works when you stop treating it like a timer to beat. For me it was less about days and more about when the warm-up started making the actual work easier, so maybe the real question is what happens on the days you do skip it. Do you notice a difference in your first ten minutes of real work, @the_derek, or does it feel the same either way?
