Found out that most professional animators sketch with those $3 Bic mechanical pencils, not fancy art gear

Was watching a behind the scenes video for Spiderverse and the lead animator said he uses a Bic 0.7mm from the drugstore for all his initial doodles, which blew my mind cause I've been spending $20 on specialty pencils that I barely use, has anyone else switched to cheap tools and seen better results?

Man, I been using the same Bic 0.5mm for like two years now and it cost me like 3 bucks. The trick is actually the cheap plastic body - it flexes just enough that you don't grip it too hard, plus when it falls off your desk it doesn't shatter like those fancy metal ones. I switched after my $30 Pentel broke on me and honestly my linework got looser and more natural cause I stopped worrying about being precious with the tool.

Hell yeah, you just changed my whole view on this. I was all about those heavy metal pens but now I get why cheap and flimsy actually wins.
