Had to pick between a pun about my lawn or a pun about my grill at the family reunion
Last weekend at my cousin's cookout, I had two dad jokes ready. One about how my grass was so tall it needed a trim before the joke could grow on them. The other about how my grill was smoking more than my punchlines. I went with the lawn one. Landed flat. Literally nobody laughed except my wife, and that was a pity chuckle. Now I'm wondering if I shoulda stuck with the grill joke or just kept my mouth shut. Anyone else ever pick the wrong joke at a big family thing?

Actually that lawn joke needed more setup. You gotta let them see the grass first, point at it, then drop the punchline. Timing matters more than the joke itself. My brother always goes for grill puns mid-burger flip and kills it because people are already watching the food. Next time try the grill one but say it while you're actually holding a spatula. Makes it land better even if the joke is weak.

Started using the grill joke at my own cookout last month while flipping burgers like @carter.laura said and it actually got a few real laughs. The spatula trick really does help sell it way better than just standing there talking about grass.

Picked the wrong one too. At least your wife acknowledged yours. Mine just walked away.
