He said, 'I just let it update automatically, it's fine,' and that casual trust in a device connected to his whole home network made me realize most people don't even know their router has a password you can change from the default.

Wait, doesn't a router password and a doorbell update seem like different things? The router's default password is a security setting you really should change yourself. Automatic software updates for a doorbell are usually a good, safe feature to leave on.
