My old router finally gave up last night

I was in the middle of a Zoom call for work around 7pm when the whole internet just dropped. Spent an hour troubleshooting, unplugging, plugging back in, the usual dance. Turns out the 6 year old router I had was just cooked, fan was dead and it was overheating. Anyone else hang onto old networking gear way too long because it still kinda works?

Nah, six years is rookie numbers, I'm still running a router from 2012 and it works fine.

Old routers are like old pickup trucks, they just keep chugging along. But the security patches stop coming after a while, that's the real issue. A 2012 router is basically an open door for anyone who knows what they're doing.

Look, I get it - I ran a Netgear from 2012 until last year. Then I actually looked at my router login page and saw there hadn't been a firmware update since 2016. That got me to swap it out real quick.
