I thought my router's guest network was pointless until my smart TV got hacked
For years I just let all my devices connect to the same main Wi-Fi, thinking the guest network was for visitors only. Then my smart TV started showing weird ads and a search history I didn't make. My ISP's security guy said it was likely a malware attack through a weak app on the TV. He told me to put all my 'Internet of Things' stuff, like the TV, thermostat, and lights, on the isolated guest network. I did that six months ago and the strange activity stopped completely. It's a simple step that actually makes a big difference. What other devices do you guys keep off your main network?

Guess my smart fridge was getting jealous of all the attention my main network devices were getting. I mean, I put my robot vacuum and those weird smart plugs on the guest network too, mostly so they can't gossip about my bad habits. It's kinda funny how we have to build digital moats around our own toasters now.

My wife's smart speaker once started playing polka music after we argued about laundry.
