Got my card skimmed at a gas station off I-95 in Florence, SC, and now I drive 10 minutes out of my way to pay inside
Stopped for gas at a station right off I-95 near Florence, South Carolina back in March, and about two days later my bank called me about three charges in Miami I never made. I had tapped my debit card at the pump like I always do, never thought twice about it, and the person on the phone said the pump had one of those overlay skimmers that sits right on top of the real reader so you can't even tell. Took me almost a month to get the $340 back and I had to get a new card, new number, and update every single bill I pay online. Since then I only pay cash or walk inside, even if it's pouring rain or I'm in a hurry, and yeah it adds 10 minutes to every stop. A buddy of mine who works at a credit union says the chip reader inside is way harder to mess with than the outside pumps, which is why the crooks target the pumps in the first place. Curious what everyone else does, do you wiggle the card slot before you use it, or is there some app you trust more than the pump itself?
