Walking through the old cemetery in Salem, I saw a headstone with a name that's perfect for a ghost story...

It was for a woman named Mercy, and the dates were just 'Born 1692, Died 1692'. Has anyone else found a real-world detail that sparked a whole new idea?

Found a grave in a tiny West Virginia town for a man named Obedience Justice. He was a Civil War drummer boy who died at 15. That name and his age just stuck with me, ended up writing a whole short story about the ghost of a drummer leading lost hikers out of the woods. Those old stones are full of weird, perfect hooks. Your Mercy find is super creepy in the best way.

Oh man, that's an amazing story idea. It's wild how a name can just unlock a whole world. I had a similar thing happen visiting family in rural Pennsylvania, where I saw a tiny, worn stone for a woman named "Experience." No dates, just the name. I must have spent an hour just sitting there wondering about her whole life, you know? It's like these people leave behind little puzzles made of stone.

Names like that really do the heavy lifting for a writer. My great aunt's middle name was Temperance, which always felt like a challenge she probably failed. Makes you wonder what the parents were thinking when they filled out the birth certificate.
