Stumbled on a 20 year old notebook from a creative writing class I took in college

Last month I was cleaning out my garage and found this old spiral notebook from a creative writing elective I took back in 2004 at community college. First few pages were full of prompts the teacher gave us like 'write a scene where the main character loses something important' and 'describe a room using only smells and sounds.' I spent the whole weekend reading through my terrible stories about aliens and breakup poems. It got me thinking about how those basic prompts shaped the way I still look at stuff today. Has anyone else dug up old writing assignments and felt like you were talking to a totally different person?

Found my own creative writing notebook from 2002 with a prompt asking us to write from the perspective of a vending machine. It worked for me because those simple exercises forced me to slow down and notice small details I normally overlook.

Oh wow, so you're saying vending machine poetry is still out there haunting people?
