My writing group said my prompts were too vague, so I started adding one weird rule to each
Last month at a critique night in Portland, this guy Marcus told me my prompts were all setup and no pressure, so people just stared at the page. Now every prompt I write has to include a rule like "you can't use the letter E" or "the story happens in one minute," and my group went from 4 people sharing to 11. The strange part is the rules seem to unlock way better scenes than total freedom ever did. Anyone else use rules or limits to get people actually writing?
Those silly rules totally work! Played a game once where every sentence had to start with the next letter of the alphabet and it forced me to write stuff I never would have come up with on my own. Constraints shut down that blank page panic and get you moving.
