The customer who argued a rain check was a discount voucher

Last Tuesday at the hardware store in Boise, this guy brings up a rain check for a $12 tarp that was on sale. He says it means he gets 30% off any tarp forever. I showed him the fine print, he still wouldn't budge. Manager came over, told him it was only for that specific item and date. He stood there for 15 minutes, then asked to speak to the CEO. Has anyone else had people twist store policy into something completely different, or is it just my store?
