I used to think a 15-second pre-lift check was enough, but a near-miss with a cracked block on a job in Tacoma changed my mind.

Oh man, that's scary. I read a story last week about a rigger who found a bad weld on a hook during his full check. It was just a tiny crack, but he said it could have gone any minute. That extra minute looking things over isn't just a rule, it's what keeps everyone safe. Really makes you slow down and look twice at everything.

My buddy had a close call like that with a frayed sling last month. Totally get what @mary_foster92 means about that extra minute, it's everything. He found it just by running his glove over it.

Ran my hand along a carabiner gate last spring and felt a tiny notch I couldn't even see. That was it, just a rough spot my glove caught. Threw it right in the trash. Makes you wonder how many close calls happen because someone was in a rush. Grace607, your buddy gets it. That simple check is the whole game.
