I finally realized I was leveling booms all wrong for years

I was on a job in Tacoma like 6 months ago and this older operator on a neighboring crane just casually asked why I was checking my level so early. Told him I always did it after the first pick, thought that was standard. He laughed and said wait until the load is chain tight but before it leaves the ground, the settle tells you everything. I tried it on the next lift and felt that boom settle into a way more natural position, been doing it that way ever since. Any of you guys have a habit you picked up late that seems obvious now?

Honestly, that's the kind of tip that hits different when you finally see it work. @the_derek, I feel you on the paint sprayer thing, we all got those "duh" moments.

Took me 15 years to figure out you should pull the latch on a paint sprayer, lol.
