Shoutout to the 68 year old client who made me rethink hard gel on older nails
Last Tuesday I was at my chair in Portland finishing a fill on a client named Ruth, and her nails kept lifting at the sidewalls no matter how thin I laid the product. She mentioned her old tech in Seattle used to do a shorter apex and a softer side file, and I kinda brushed it off at first. Two clients later I tried her way on a lady with thin, ridged nails, and the retention was night and day better. I've done hard gel one way for 9 years and never questioned it until Ruth basically handed me a lesson in five minutes. Has anyone else had a client school them on something you thought you already had down?
Had a 71 year old named Carol in my chair two years back who told me my side file angle was fighting the natural ridge pattern on her nails. I nodded and kept doing it my way for about a month until her lifting got so bad I finally tried her angle out of pure frustration. Night and day, same as you. She'd been getting her nails done since before I was born and I was too proud to listen at first. Now I file every ridged nail that way and my fills last way longer. Ruth saved you nine years of stubbornness in one visit. Old clients know their own hands better than we do, and we should probably shut up and listen more often.
