A client's comment about her grandma's hair made me see my work in a new way
I was doing a color correction for a regular named Sarah in my chair last Tuesday, and she told me her 85 year old grandma still gets her hair set every Friday at the same salon she's gone to for 50 years. She said, 'It's not about the style, it's her one hour of feeling cared for.' I've been so focused on perfecting balayage and curtain bangs, but that simple idea of just making someone feel good really hit me. How often do you all step back and think about the care part of our job, not just the cut or color?

That story reminds me of my old barber, Frank. He ran a two-chair shop and would always ask about your dad or your job before he even picked up the clippers. The haircut was fine, but you went back because he remembered your kid's name. It felt like visiting a friend who just happened to give you a trim. That kind of thing sticks with you way longer than a perfect fade.

Used to believe the haircut itself was the whole job. Reading what @gavin692 said and your story about Frank really shifted that for me. It's the remembering, the asking, the little human stuff that builds the real connection. A good haircut gets you out the door, but that feeling of being known is what brings you back next month. You're right, that's what sticks.
