The IT director who made me stop blaming the hardware
Had a sit-down last Tuesday with a hospital IT director who subcontracted our shop for a server refresh. He watched me swap out three drives over two weeks, chasing what I thought was a failing RAID array. Finally he said, 'You keep testing the disks, but have you bothered to check the nightly backup logs?' I pulled them up and sure enough, the job was silently skipping the same volume every night. Turns out a permissions change from a junior admin was the real culprit, and my hardware instinct had cost them 14 hours of downtime. Now I ask for the backup logs before I ever crack open a chassis. Anyone else ever get humbled by a simple log check?
man that's rough, 14 hours because of one dumb permission change. i've been there though, spent way too long staring at hardware when the real answer was sitting in some log file the whole time. it's humbling for sure but honestly those are the lessons that stick with you.
