The $8 capacitor that took down a whole office network
Last Tuesday I swapped out a swollen cap on a Dell OptiPlex 7010 that kept random rebooting, and the machine ran perfect for about 3 hours. Then the whole office of 12 users lost their shared drive access because that same PC was acting as the file server, which I didn't realize until the owner walked over and asked why everyone's spreadsheets were frozen. Lesson learned: before touching any hardware, trace what else depends on that box, even if it sounds dumb. Has anyone else had a small repair domino into a bigger outage because of an undocumented setup?
Wait, did you check if there were any backups of that shared drive before you powered it down, or was everyone just working on live files this whole time? Also, how long did it take before someone finally fessed up that the office PC was actually the server?
