Stuck between two comic shops for pre-orders

I had to pick between my local shop that charges cover price but is 20 minutes away, and a bigger store across town with cheaper variants but a $5 fee. I went with the local place since I got to chat with the owner about the new Ultimate Spider-Man run. Did picking the closer shop work out for anyone else or did the fees and selection make you switch?

The $5 fee thing is a bit weird but I think most bigger stores do that to cover the cost of holding books that dont sell. My local shop just does a flat deposit system instead which feels fairer. Did they explain what the fee actually goes toward or is it just a random charge?

Nathan's shop sounds like they actually thought it through... the deposit thing makes way more sense than just a flat fee out of nowhere. I've seen so many places do the random charge thing with zero explanation, it's frustrating.
