Tuesday at Blue Canyon Coffee, 3 kids, and a surprise quiet corner
Last week I dragged all three kids to Blue Canyon Coffee in Portland because the van AC died and home was unbearable. They each got a hot chocolate, I got a cold brew, and somehow a back booth opened up right as we walked in. I set up my laptop, the kids actually colored for 40 minutes straight, and I finished a freelance draft I'd been stuck on for two days. The barista even refilled my water without me asking, which felt like winning the lottery. Any other parents found a spot that somehow survives a kid meltdown or two?

Honestly, that back booth thing is pure luck, but I've learned to scout out cafes with those big, heavy tables near a wall outlet. The key is going right when they open, like 7am, so you get first pick of the quiet spots before the crowd hits. Also, don't sleep on bringing a roll of washi tape and letting the kids stick it to the table and their own artwork, it buys you at least another 15 minutes. And if a meltdown does happen, ask if they have a little side patio or even a hallway you can duck into, most baristas are cool about it if you're buying something. Ngl, finding that one place is like striking gold.

Ever tried scouting the spot the day before and asking the barista which table stays quietest, that way you already know your spot before the morning rush even starts...
