Coworker said my espresso routine was just performance art
Guy I share an office with watched me dial in for 15 minutes, pulled a shot, and said 'you realize that's just you putting on a show, right?' It hit different because he drinks gas station coffee and doesn't care, but now I'm wondering if I'm doing all this ritual for me or for the gram. Anyone else get called out like that?

oh man, that hit me hard because i literally had the same thing happen. my roommate watched me weigh out 18.2 grams, use my little distribution tool, level it with the razor, and he's like 'bro you just spent ten minutes making coffee that's gone in 30 seconds.' i felt so called out. and the worst part is he's right some days. i catch myself recording the shot spinning into the cup and i'm like... am i doing this for the taste or for the likes? but then i remember that gas station coffee tastes like burnt tires and i'd rather spend my time doing something i actually enjoy even if it looks ridiculous.

One time I spent 45 minutes dialing in a single shot and then forgot to actually drink it.

The 'for the taste or the likes' part got me. I used to think people who filmed their pour overs were just chasing internet points. But you're right about gas station coffee. I've been drinking Folgers for a decade and never thought twice until I tried a real shot from a friend. Now I'm the guy timing my blooms and it feels stupid but also I can't go back. You kind of made me see the whole thing differently.
