My sister said she 'hates' coding because it's just math, and it made me think.
We were talking over coffee in Portland last weekend, and she said she tried a Python tutorial but quit after 20 minutes because she thought it was all about numbers and formulas. I realized I used to think the same way, but it's more about solving puzzles and making things. How do you explain what coding actually is to someone who's totally new and maybe a bit scared of it?

You said it's about solving puzzles and making things, that's exactly right. I tell people it's like giving a very dumb friend very clear step by step instructions. Like telling them how to make a sandwich, but you have to say "pick up the knife, then pick up the mayo" because they won't just know. The math part is just one tool for some jobs, but most of it is just logic and breaking a big problem into tiny steps.

Forget the sandwich, try explaining how to tie shoes to that same friend. That's where the real puzzle starts.

Wait your sister quit after 20 minutes? That's wild. @the_wyatt has it right, it's like teaching someone super literal how to do a simple task. The math fear is real but it's mostly just telling the computer what to do in order. It's way more about breaking down a problem than doing equations. I bet if she tried making a dumb little website or a text game she'd see it's not a math class at all.
