Showerthought: A regular told me my old chat room rules were too strict
Back when I ran a small forum, a long time user said 'you're killing the vibe with all the topic police stuff.' I loosened up the rules and just let people talk more, and the whole place got way more active. Anyone else have to learn to step back and let a chat just flow?

Oh man, totally! I ran a Discord server for a game and was way too strict about keeping things on topic. The second someone went off on a tangent, I'd jump in. It felt so dead! I finally just stopped, let people joke around and go off track, and it was like night and day. The chat just came alive because people weren't scared to post. It's a hard lesson to learn, but you're right, sometimes you just gotta let it flow.

Honestly had the same thing happen with a group chat for my fantasy league. Started out just talking football but it got so quiet. Tbh letting people share random memes and talk about their day made it way better. Ngl it feels wrong at first to not keep things on topic, but people just want to hang out. The strict rules were killing the vibe without me even seeing it. Now it's actually fun to check the chat.

Yeah, my buddy did that with his gaming clan chat. He was super strict about only talking strategy and updates, and it was a ghost town. He finally let them post dumb pet pics and talk about movies, and now it's buzzing all day. He said it went from a chore to check to his favorite notification.
