I think our chat lounge's rule against side conversations is too strict

In my experience, some of the best ideas come from those unplanned tangents, your mileage may vary.

My improv class fell flat when the teacher banned all off-topic jokes between scenes.

But what about people who take a minute to warm up in group chats? Sometimes a random side joke about coffee makes a shy person jump in, then they're way more likely to share their real thoughts on the main topic later. Cutting that out means you only hear from the people who are already comfortable diving straight in. The rule might be trying to keep things clean, but it could also be making the convo feel stiff and missing out on quieter voices.
