I flipped on letting spicy jokes slide in our chat room
I laughed along until a new member called it out, and seeing their point made me rethink where the line is.

Yeah, that exact thing happens everywhere. Like when one friend finally says a bar is too loud and you realize you've all just been shouting for years. Or at work when a new hire asks why a certain inside joke is funny and suddenly you have to explain the weird mean edge to it. It's wild how a single person seeing it fresh can flip a whole group's normal.

Actually, @carter.laura, that's a good point but sometimes the group doesn't flip at all. I've seen friends just ignore the person who says the bar is loud and keep shouting anyway. Or when a new hire asks about the joke, everyone brushes it off and calls them too sensitive. Changing a group's normal needs everyone to be open to it, not just one fresh view. Lots of times people get defensive and cling harder to the old way. What do you think, does that ring true from what you've seen?

Ever notice how much gets set on cruise control until a new voice points it out? Like @morgan_bailey93 said, groups often JUST need that one person to make everyone else admit they NEED to check their mirrors.
