Warning: the guy behind me at the DMV in Toledo said something about my truck that I still think about
We were stuck in line for 40 minutes and he asked if I was a contractor, then said his old foreman never let him touch a saw until he'd spent a year just watching. I always figured the fastest way to learn was to jump in and mess up, but he said watching first saved him from losing two fingers on a table saw back in 2011. Now I'm wondering how many guys I've thrown straight into the deep end too soon. Anyone else ever have a stranger in a boring line hand them advice that actually stuck?
Guy in line at the DMV drops a table saw safety lecture while you are both staring at the number board for 40 minutes, that is some quality eavesdropping material. Weird how the most random stranger in the most boring place ends up saying something you carry around for years. And the irony of almost losing fingers while learning the trade is that you can't exactly practice growing them back.
