Last month I was drying clothes at the 24-hour WashWorld on Delmar when a siren went off, turns out it was a test, but the guy next to me started talking about how he rides out storms in the parking lot. We got to chatting and he told me he keeps a go-bag in his trunk with a weather radio, cash, and a laminated list of people to call, all stuff he learned after a tornado hit his neighborhood back in 2019. I'd been waking up at 3 AM every few nights convinced something bad was coming, and honestly, I never thought a stranger at a laundromat would be the one to calm me down. He even showed me his bag right there, and it was all simple things, nothing fancy, just practical. I went home and made my own version, cost me about $45 at the hardware store, and my sleep has been way better since. Has anyone else had a random stranger at a mundane spot give them advice that actually stuck? Where was it and what did they say?

The $45 thing is cool and all, but just a heads up, your go-bag should have a few more basics than just a radio and cash. I learned this the hard way when my car broke down in a snowstorm, and I realized I had no blankets or water. You really want a portable charger, a first aid kit, and maybe some non-perishable snacks, too. Also, laminated lists are great, but make sure you actually update them every few months, otherwise you're calling people who moved. The stranger's advice was solid, but practical means covering your basics, not just the fun stuff.
