Spent 20 minutes watching a guy tie his boat to the dock before I asked for help.

I was at Lake Tahoe last summer trying to dock my rental for the first time. Had no idea how to tie a cleat hitch. Must have looked real confused because this older guy in the slip next to me just walked over and showed me in under a minute. Been using that knot ever since. Anyone else had a stranger walk up and teach you something you were clearly failing at?

Is @the_stella saying that minivan drivers are secretly the best teachers on the road?

Oh man, that's exactly how I felt trying to parallel park my dad's old truck downtown for the first time. This lady in a minivan just got out, waved me to stop, and guided me right into the spot like she was landing a plane. People can be surprisingly cool when you're clearly struggling. I still think about that woman sometimes, just how she didn't even ask, she just saw I needed help and gave it. Makes you want to pay it forward when you see someone else fumbling with something.

Right?! And there's always that one guardian angel in a minivan who shows up just when you're about to give up and park in a no parking zone like a heathen. I swear, those people are more helpful than AAA sometimes... they just appear like magic. It's almost like they've all been through the exact same struggle and now they're passing on the good karma. But then there's the other side of the coin... the people in BMWs who just stare at you until you either magically fit or hit their bumper.
