My broke down minivan at a rest stop outside Knoxville changed my whole view on asking for help

Last month my 2005 Odyssey died on I-40 near the Tennessee border, right at the rest stop. Alternator went out completely, no warning. I was stuck there for about 2 hours trying to figure out what to do, sweating in the parking lot. A guy named Phil from a construction crew stopped to see if I needed a jump or something. He didn't have the right parts but he drove me 20 minutes to the nearest AutoZone and waited until I got a new alternator. I've always prided myself on handling things alone, never asking anyone for a hand. But Phil just kept saying 'that's what folks do' and wouldn't take any money for gas. Has anyone else had a random stranger help them out of a jam and it made you rethink being so stubborn about doing everything solo?

That 'that's what folks do' part got me too because I was the same way before someone helped me.

Not to change the subject, but my friend Janelle had this exact same thing happen to her a couple years ago? Her car caught fire on the highway outside of Nashville, just a small electrical fire but it totally freaked her out. Some guy in a truck pulled over and used his fire extinguisher to put it out before it got bad, then called his mechanic friend to tow her to a shop for free. She told me that moment made her realize she'd been acting like she was on a one-woman island her whole life, and it scared her a little how much she'd been missing out on just by refusing to let people in.
