Man, that Arizona story is exactly why it's such a bad call... the padding is the real problem, it just traps all that moisture against the floor. Even a bath mat you can pick up and wash, but wall-to-wall carpet is a sponge you can't wring out.

I read a story on a home repair forum about a couple in Arizona who put carpet in their master bathroom. They thought it felt cozy underfoot, but within a year, the whole area smelled musty from mold growing in the padding. The constant humidity from showers made the carpet stay wet for hours, even with a fan running. They ended up pulling it all out and found black spots on the wood floor underneath. It's a classic example of why soft flooring and water just don't mix.
