A client's comment about my miter saw setup made me rethink everything
I was installing some baseboard in a kitchen remodel last month, and the homeowner asked why I was cutting everything on the floor. I told him it was faster, but he pointed out I was getting up and down constantly. He said, 'My back hurts just watching you.' I built a simple rolling stand with a stop block system at waist height the next day. It probably saves me 20 minutes a day just on movement. Anyone else have a simple jig or setup that saved your body from unnecessary strain?

Man, my buddy's back thanks him for his kneeling stool now.

My uncle ran a crew for thirty years and always said working on the floor builds character. He thought rolling stands and fancy jigs just made carpenters soft and slow to adapt on different job sites. Sometimes the old school way of just getting the work done, even if it's harder, builds better habits for when you don't have your perfect setup. That constant up and down might keep you more alert than standing in one spot all day. Maybe there's a reason the simple way stuck around for so long.
