Just realized most people switch careers 3-4 times, not 7 like that stat everyone quotes

I was reading that Bureau of Labor data from 2023 and saw the average is actually around 3.2 career changes by age 50, not the 7 number I kept hearing. Who's right on this - do you think folks count job hops differently or is the 7 number just made up to sell self help books? I'm curious what you all have seen.

Yeah, that "7 times" stat is just one of those things that sounded good so nobody checked it.

Wait, you're telling me I've been quoting that 7 number wrong this whole time?

That 7 number got passed around so much it feels like truth now. The Bureau of Labor data counts actual career field changes, not just different companies or job titles which is probably where the confusion comes in. People hear "job changes" and think switching companies counts, when really moving from accounting to teaching is more what they mean by a career shift.
