My buddy swore his $40 Ozark Trail tent was better than my $300 REI one
He said it's all about how you set it up and site selection, not the price tag, and honestly after camping together three times last summer I'm starting to wonder if I'm just paying for the name. Has anyone else had a cheap piece of gear actually outperform the expensive version on a trip?

Did your buddy also claim a cardboard box sleeps just as warm as a down sleeping bag? I'm starting to feel personally attacked by all this logical logic.

Had a buddy who swore up and down that his $30 Walmart sleeping bag was "basically the same" as my North Face one. So we went camping in the Ozarks in November. He spent the whole night shivering in his truck with the heater running while I slept fine in a tent. @gibson.sarah it's the same kind of thinking that says a cardboard box has the same R-value as down. Some people just have to learn the hard way I guess. Hope your buddy at least bought the first round of coffee the next morning.

Same pattern as people swearing cheap wine beats expensive bottles in blind taste tests.
