Reminds me of a buddy who got a "professional" stud finder from a roadside vendor. It beeped constantly, even in the middle of an empty room. Some of that off-brand truck stop gear is just total junk.

That "beeped constantly" thing is the real issue. Makes you doubt every single reading after that, so you end up just knocking on the wall anyway.
