I finally stopped my automatic $50 monthly charity donation

My friend pointed out that I was giving to a big national group while our local food bank was struggling, so I switched to giving them $40 in person each month. Anyone else feel like automated giving can sometimes miss the point?

Automated giving can make charity feel like just another bill you pay. You lose that personal connection to where your money goes and why it matters. Redirecting it locally, even if it's a bit less, makes the whole act meaningful again.

Totally get what you mean, @emmawood. I set up a monthly donation years ago and honestly forgot what it was even for until this post. Felt more like a gym membership I kept meaning to cancel. Switched to buying groceries for our local food bank sometimes, and it feels way more real, even if it's just a few bags.

Setting a calendar reminder to review recurring donations every six months works for me. I check if the group still lines up with what I care about and if I can still afford it. It turns that autopilot bill into a real choice again.
