First month of envelope budgeting just wrecked my assumptions

I sat down last Sunday with my receipts from October and realized I spent $237 on fast food lunches during jobsites alone, way more than the $150 I had in that envelope. Had to pull cash from my gas envelope to cover it, which meant three days of carpooling with my foreman until payday. Anyone else find that first month of tracking exposes spending you never even noticed?

oh man the reflection thing is so true. i had that moment with coffee runs last year, thought i was spending maybe $30 a month and it was like $90. the guilt stuck with me more than the actual change at first, like id order a latte and feel this little pang of shame.

That thing about catching your reflection when you didn't know anyone was looking... yeah that's pretty accurate actually. It stings at first because you realize you've been lying to yourself about little things for months. But here's what gets me - after you see it, do you find yourself actually changing the habit or do you just feel guilty about it every time you pull up to the drive-thru? I'm curious if the awareness alone is enough for most people or if you have to pair it with some kind of punishment system to really break the cycle.

$237 on fast food lunches during jobsites" - that hit me hard lol. I saw this tiktok where a guy said tracking your money feels like catching your reflection in a window when you didn't know anyone was looking. Its ugly at first but you can't unsee it.
