That guy in the hostel said to skip the tourist card in Lima...
Some backpacker in Cusco told me not to buy the tourist card for Lima because city sites are free after 5pm. I listened and showed up at the Monastery of San Francisco at 4:45pm ready to save $15. Guards literally locked the gates in my face at 5pm sharp and waved me off. Has anyone else gotten burned by local advice that was totally outdated?

Makes me think of how people ALWAYS give advice based on what worked for them five years ago without checking if it still holds up. Same thing happens with restaurant recommendations, bus routes, even visa rules. Everyone assumes their one experience is the universal truth and forgets things change. I learned this the hard way too when someone told me the cheap lunch spot near the plaza in Cusco was still open, showed up and it had been replaced by a vape shop. People mean well but they don't bother to fact check before they speak. Best to look up official hours online yourself every time, even if it feels like overkill.

Lol yep, my friend showed up to a "still amazing" taco spot that was a parking lot.

Man I feel this so hard. I actually read a blog post recently where this dude said the same thing about the Monestary and how he got locked out too. It's like everyone just repeats what they heard without checking if it's still true. @diana_black your taco spot story is the exact vibe, parking lot replacements are brutal. Best to just Google official hours instead of trusting some random on a tour bus.
