Showerthought: I was paying for checked bags for years before a guy in a Lisbon hostel line asked me a question.
I was checking in for a flight to Porto, grumbling about the 60 euro fee. The backpacker behind me just said, 'Why not wear your jacket?' I had a bulky winter coat stuffed in my bag. He wore his, plus a hoodie and carried a book. My bag suddenly fit the sizer. I'd been throwing away hundreds. What's the most obvious thing you all packed that you could have just worn?

Used to pack my hiking boots every trip... took up half the bag. Saw a guy at the airport just wearing his. Felt like an idiot. Now I just wear the bulky shoes on the plane and pack the lighter ones. Saves a ton of space.

How many times have you done that thing where you pack the obvious bulky item? I mean I used to do the exact same thing with my winter boots, they're just so heavy. It feels like such a simple fix once you see someone else doing it, but you never think of it yourself.

That hiking boot trick saved me two checked bags last year.
