Just hit 100 nights in hostels without paying for a single bed
I've been traveling through Southeast Asia for the past six months and kept a tally. I used a mix of work-for-stay deals, last-minute booking apps, and even volunteering at reception desks. The biggest win was in Chiang Mai, where I helped run social events for a week in exchange for a free dorm spot. It saved me over $200 in that city alone. Has anyone else found a reliable way to get free hostel stays, or was I just really lucky?

Work-for-stay is the most reliable method I've found... you just have to ask at the front desk when it's quiet. Cleaning common areas for a few hours is a common trade. Some places in Europe even let you do night audits if you're okay with weird hours. It's not always advertised, so you gotta be direct and ask the manager.

Ever think about how this could backfire if the hotel's insurance doesn't cover random workers? @richard226 has a solid point, but that's a big risk for a manager to take on someone they just met.

Worry about that insurance thing all the time. Saw a guy sprain his ankle mopping a hostel lobby once, and the whole situation got messy real fast. Makes you realize how much trust you're putting in a handshake deal.
