I was totally wrong about hostel kitchens being a waste of time
idk if it's just me but I always thought cooking in hostel kitchens sounded like a nightmare. way too crowded and people leave messes everywhere. but on my trip to Portland last month I stayed at this place with a huge kitchen and actually saved like $40 a day just making my own breakfast and dinner. the trick was going at off hours like 7am or 8pm when nobody else was around. also brought my own mini bottle of oil and spices in a ziploc. has anyone else had good luck with hostel cooking or am I just lucky?

Oh yeah, I've done the same. Off hours make all the difference.

Three days ago I went to my local Walmart at 6:15am and there was literally one other person in the cereal aisle. I got my kid's favorite lucky charms without any chaos. @the_brian your burnt toast story cracked me up but at least you didn't set off any sprinklers. Off hours save you from the nightmare of dodging carts and people who stop right in the middle of the aisle to stare at their phones. I swear the 5pm crowd acts like they've never seen groceries before.
