Hostel private rooms are actually worth it for me now

I always thought paying extra for a private room in a hostel was just throwing money away, but last month in Barcelona I booked one for $45 and got a full night's sleep plus access to the free breakfast and kitchen. Has anyone else found a hostel perk that made the upgrade actually pay off?

Booked a private room in Lisbon last fall for $38 a night and it came with a massive Portuguese breakfast - fresh bread, cheese, ham, fruit, and good coffee. Felt like I was staying somewhere much fancier for half the price. The real win was having a quiet place to crash after late nights exploring without dealing with snorers or people packing at 5am.

Did that free breakfast in Barcelona actually have real food or just bread and cereal?

Ha yeah, I feel that question. I stayed at a spot in Seville that advertised a "continental breakfast" and it was literally just a basket of dry toast and some jam packets. But honestly, the best breakfast situation I found was a hostel in Madrid where the guy running it would just set out a big spread of whatever he felt like that morning (some days it was leftover tortilla de patatas and fresh OJ, other days just bread and butter). It was hit or miss, but the good days were amazing.
