TIL a neighbor lady told me she feeds her family of 4 on $35 a week by shopping only the clearance meat section

She told me at the bus stop that she hits the store at 7am on Wednesdays when they mark down the close-dated packs. Has anyone else found a specific day or time when your local store slashes prices on meat?

Oh man, I appreciate that level of dedication. I've tried to be that person but my alarm clock and I have a very strained relationship, especially when it comes to 7am anything. Last time I attempted the early bird clearance meat run I stumbled in at 9:15 and all that was left was a single package of ground turkey that looked like it had been through a war and smelled like regret. The lady at the butcher counter actually felt bad for me and gave me a coupon for a free rotisserie chicken, which I think was her way of saying "please don't come back this late again." So yeah, I'm still figuring out my store's schedule but apparently my schedule and their schedule are not on speaking terms.

Our local Kroger marks down meat right around 8:30 on Tuesday mornings, and I've been doing the same thing for about a year now. Last week I picked up a family pack of chicken breasts for $4.73 and a big pork loin for $6.50, both perfectly fine to freeze right away. It takes a little planning but the savings really add up over time.
