Question about dried beans versus canned for chili

I picked a bag of dried pinto beans over the canned kind for a big pot, and it saved me about $3.50 total. Anyone have a good trick for getting them tender without a pressure cooker?

My friend's beans were rocks for hours.

Saving three bucks isn't worth the hassle. You have to soak them for hours, then boil them forever, and they still sometimes come out weird and mealy. A can is open and ready in two seconds, and the texture is always perfect. That time you spend babysitting a pot of beans is worth more than a few dollars. Why make cooking harder than it needs to be?

Read that adding baking soda helps soften them.
