My neighbor Deb said her stew meat was $3.50 a pound at Aldi... I was paying $8 at the grocery store

She told me she boils the tougher cuts with a bay leaf for 2 hours and it comes out tender every time. I tried it with a cheap chuck roast last Sunday and it actually worked better than the expensive pre-cut stuff. Anyone know other tricks for making cheap meat taste like it cost twice as much?

Wait, wait... $3.50 a pound for stew meat? Did your neighbor Deb say she found it at a normal Aldi or some kind of time-warp Aldi from 2015? I can't even get their regular ground beef for that price anymore. Either way, the bay leaf trick is legit though, I've done it with a cheap chuck roast and it turns out way better than the expensive stuff. Also, if you want to skip the long boil, try tossing the meat in a slow cooker with a can of cream of mushroom soup and a packet of onion soup mix, that'll break down anything in a few hours.

My neighbor Deb's a liar if she got stew meat for $3.50 at Aldi. I shop there every week and the cheapest beef I've seen was $5 a pound for something you'd need a saw to cut through. Bay leaves won't fix that. You're better off just paying the $8 for the pre-cut stuff and saving yourself the 2 hours of babysitting a pot.

Take a look at the weekly ads online before you go, @umar59. Aldi marks down meat that's close to the sell-by date, and Deb probably grabbed a manager's special. You just gotta cook it that day or freeze it, but the savings are real if you're willing to plan ahead.
