My $60 phone mount vs the $15 one, night and day on I-5

I drove from Seattle to Portland twice in one month, same route, same cargo. First trip I used a cheap $15 magnetic mount from a gas station, phone flew off three times on rough pavement, nearly cracked my screen on the second bounce. Second trip I finally tried a $60 ram-style mount with a locking grip, not a single slip over 180 miles, even on that awful stretch near Olympia. The cheap one held fine on smooth city streets but couldn't handle any vibration, the extra money bought actual grip where it counts. If you're hauling just a few miles locally, sure, save the cash, but for highway runs it's not even close. Has anyone else burned money on a mount that only works at low speeds? What's been your cutoff price before it actually holds?

That same pattern shows up everywhere, not just mounts. Cheap versions of anything that handles stress fail exactly when you need them most, whether it's straps, coolers, or tool bags. The real test isn't the parking lot, it's the worst stretch of road you hit on a bad day.
