Mortar mix debate: Type S vs Type N for a residential wall I built last month
I was working on a retaining wall in my backyard in Austin last month and went back and forth on mortar types. I used Type S because it's stronger, but now I'm wondering if Type N would have been better to let the wall flex a bit more with the ground movement here. The wall hasn't cracked yet but I keep second-guessing myself. Anyone here have a strong opinion on which one is actually better for residential work?

Your comment actually points to something I see a lot in my own life, not just in building. People get so caught up making the perfect choice on one detail that they miss the bigger weaknesses in the whole project. It reminds me of how folks will spend hours researching a kitchen faucet but ignore that their pipes are fifty years old and leaking. The mortar mix matters, sure, but it's just one piece of a bigger puzzle. Good base prep and proper drainage probably do more for your wall than switching from S to N ever would. You made a reasonable choice and it's working. That's really all you can ask for in this kind of work.

Ha yeah I've been there. Thing is people get way too hung up on picking the "right" mortar like it's some life or death choice. In my experience what matters way more is how you mix it and prep the base. I've seen Type N walls fail because the ground shifted and the blocks just slid apart on a wet day. And I've seen Type S crack because someone didn't put in expansion joints. It's like buying the most expensive tires for a car with a warped frame. You're overthinking the small stuff when the real problem is deeper. Your wall hasn't cracked, you're fine. Move on to the next project and stop worrying.

Oh man that's too true! I had a buddy who spent weeks agonizing over the perfect mortar for a little retaining wall in his backyard. He watched like 15 YouTube videos, asked everyone at the hardware store, finally picked some fancy pre-blended Type S. Spent all weekend mixing it just right, laid the blocks perfectly. Then two months later the thing started leaning because he never bothered to put gravel or drainage pipe behind it. Water just built up and pushed it over. He was so focused on the mortar he forgot the wall needed to breathe. Ended up tearing the whole thing down and starting over with plain Type N and a proper drain. Lesson learned the hard way for him.
