Learning pottery from videos during lunch breaks feels worlds apart from my school days

I used to just play with clay in art class without a clue. Now, I follow online guides and my pieces actually hold water. It's neat to see the progress.

But what if just playing with clay without a guide was actually more important? All those videos give you steps to follow, so you're just copying someone else's plan. Back in school, you had to figure things out by messing up, which taught you how clay really works. Getting a pot to hold water is cool, but it might just mean you're good at following orders. The real creativity happens when there's no one telling you what to do next. Isn't there a bigger win in making a weird, lopsided thing that's totally your own?

Totally get that, reminds me of my kid's kindergarten art show last month. Every single sculpture was this wild, abstract blob with googly eyes stuck on it, and the parents were losing their minds over them. The teacher said they just got a lump of clay and the only rule was "make it hold together." Some of those funky little monsters had more personality than any perfect vase I've ever seen. Makes you wonder if we unlearn how to actually make stuff once we start worrying about doing it the right way.

Lol, guess my art degree was just expensive finger painting.
